11TH ANNUAL C3 / KINETICO CALEDON KIDS OF STEEL TRIATHLON

“Its hard to believe the Caledon C3 Kinetico Kids of Steel Triathlon is already in it’s 11th year” said co-race director Stewart Barclay.    The event began as a way to honour Olympic Gold Medalist Simon Whitfield after his victory in Sydney in 2000” said Olympic coach Barrie Shepley.   The Caledon event prides itself on being one of the largest kids triathlon races in Canada each year, with over 120 kids in the 2.5-5 year old category alone.  “We have over 150 volunteers who are dedicated to this race each year and we understand that its our way to give kids and families a chance to participate in triathlon” said co-race director Bob knuckey.

The day is broken into 5 segments. Early morning will be the draft-legal races for 14-15 and 16-19 year olds. Athletes in the drafting race format must have passed an OAT draft-legal bike course before the race day to be eligible for this format. After the drafting races are the adult, 14-15, and 16-19 non-drafting races continuing up until lunch. Opening ceremonies are just before lunch, followed by the community 2km and 5km running races. After the running races is the day’s highlight - the 3-6 year old non-timed kids. Each year 120 kids participate (parents can go with them). Little kids with life-jackets, tricycles, and a short fun run. The C3 Kinetico Elite Pros do a short 10-minute demo for the kids. Then the balance of the afternoon is the Kids of Steel categories from 6-7 up to 12-13 year olds. Awards are handed out all day long so that families can arrive in time for their races and leave when their awards are completed.
