It all started with Barbara Karasiuk's simple question: 'You like walking, don't you?' - and so here we were, 7 ladies from Caledon walking 60K in the Weekend to End Women's Cancers in Ottawa this past weekend. We were part of a bigger group, called 'Butterfly of Hope', but pretty soon we had the nickname 'Caledon Princesses'.

Seeing 1,000 participants at the Opening Ceremonies was quite a sight - men, women, young and old! There were veteran walkers, newcomers, survivors and those who remember. Together we raised the amazing sum of 2.1 million dollars!!!

It was an unforgettable experience walking with those wonderful people through the streets of Ottawa. We had sunshine and humidity on Saturday and pouring rain on Sunday! I don't even know how to describe the emotions we experienced during the walk - strangers coming up to you, thanking you for doing this - car drivers honking in support - spectators cheering you on! There were tears and laughter and an unbelievable team spirit!

We started the walk at Carlton University - on the second day, we were sent off by the bagpipers. Our walk took us past the Memorial for Cancer Survivors and over the beautiful grounds of Rideau Hall, the home of the Governor General. We crossed the bridge into Hull, walked past Parliament Hill, through Downtown and along Rideau Canal.

The support crew did a terrific job of keeping us going! Especially one person stood out - on his motorcycle with his pink (!) beard and pink (!) hair, who quite literally made us dance away the soreness in our legs at one of the many intersections. Then there was the CIBC branch, opening their doors for us with food and drinks, just to show their support. A pub owner spontaneously offered us hot, fresh coffee when we asked him to please use the facilities - we must have looked a lot like "drowned cats".

Walking those 60K was an unbelievable experience and we all agree with Barbara - "Some say life is too short....others say it is too long... But I know that nothing we do makes sense, if we don't touch the hearts of others while life lasts!"
